In a world that often seems dominated by youth, an extraordinary 108-year-old woman from Japan is redefining what it means to age gracefully. Shitsui Hakoishi, recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest female barber, has spent nearly a century honing her craft and continues to serve her community with dedication and flair.
Born on November 10, 1916, Shitsui’s journey into the world of barbering began at the tender age of 14 when she moved to Tokyo on her own to pursue her dreams. “I wanted to leave my colleagues behind in this work and I would demonstrate my techniques late at night,” she recalls, revealing the unwavering determination that has propelled her through life. By the time she was 20, she had obtained her barber’s license and, just three years later, established her own salon alongside her husband.
Life, however, has not always been easy for Shitsui. She faced unimaginable challenges during World War II, including the loss of her beloved husband—drafted into the Japanese army and never to return—along with the destruction of her first salon in an air raid. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken. In the aftermath, she opened a one-chair shop to support her two children, proving that adversity can be met with resilience and fortitude.
“My life has been filled with ups and downs, but my passion for barbering has never wavered,” Shitsui states. “I will continue my work until the day I die.” This profound commitment to her craft is not merely a profession; it is her way of life—a source of joy, purpose, and connection with others.
Shitsui attributes her longevity and vitality to daily exercises, a regimen she has faithfully followed since she turned 70. Her remarkable fitness led her to carry the Olympic torch at the 2021 Tokyo Games, reminding the world that age is just a number when paired with determination and vigor.
While she may have slowed down, now cutting hair for a limited number of clients each month due to knee pain, Shitsui’s passion remains undiminished. She expresses deep gratitude for the recognition and honor she has received, stating, “I am very happy for this global honor and grateful to everyone.”
Shitsui Hakoishi’s remarkable story serves as an inspiration to people of all ages. Her life is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the impact of pursuing one’s dreams, regardless of the obstacles life may present. As she continues to cut hair and share her wisdom with the next generation, she reminds us that it is never too late to follow one’s passion and that true fulfillment can be found in the simplest of joys.
